Reference List of Serials back Fine Hall Library for Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics Introduction This list contains the titles of all of the journals, all of the currently received book series, and all of the larger inactive series (with the exception of those in PAM C) that are shelved in the Fine Hall Library. Journals are shelved alphabetically by title in the four journal sections: Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Reference. Volumes of book series are shelved by call number - they may be all together under one call number or scattered throughout the collection with each title having a call number corresponding to its subject. Bold-face entries give the form of the title under which a journal is shelved, and under which a book series can be found in the catalogue. Following each of these entries are three elements, for example: Scientific American [PhysJ], HOLDINGS: 179(1948)- The element given in square brackets [], indicate whether a title is a book series or a journal. In the case of a journal it gives the section of the library in which the title is shelved. MathJ - Mathematics journalsBook - Indicates that the item is a book and is shelved by call number. If all volumes of the series have the same, or at most two, call numbers then those call numbers are given in the square brackets following the "Book",e.g. [Book; 8101.493, QA1.I95 1962]. If no call number is given then each volume of the series will have a different call number and you must get the number from the catalogue. X - These are series for which Fine Hall Library does not have a standing order. We may get them selectively, or a standing order may be shared with other branches. Consult the catalogue for individual titles. The second element preceded by "HOLDINGS" gives our holdings. If the holdings are "open", that is, ends with a dash (-) as in the case of the Scientific American example above, then the title is still being received. If the holdings are closed, that is have an ending volume number and/or date, for example: "HOLDINGS: 1(1935)-19(1954)", then the title is no longer being received, because it died, changed title, or was cancelled for economy reasons. In the latter case recent volumes of the title are, in all probability, still available from another branch library or Firestone. Ask a staff member for help. Note that the holding statement is intended primarily to give the range of the volumes that we hold. Some intermediate volumes or issues may be missing, or may never have been received. Titles that have translations or that are translations are followed by one of the following: Transl. in: - meaning "translated in", followed by the title of the translation journalIf a publication has changed title and both the earlier and later forms of the title are used for shelving, in the case of journals, or in the catalogue in case of books, then the entry is followed by one or both of the following: Later title: Earlier title: followed by the later or earlier title, respectively. Entries in ordinary print are variant or earlier forms of the title, and are not used for shelving journals. The publication can be found under the form given by the subsequent SEE: * An asterisk preceding a title indicates that this title is not owned by the Fine Hall Library. The title is either a translation of a title of which we have the original, or the original of a title of which we have the translation. If the title is owned by another branch or Firestone the symbol for that branch is given in parenthesis after the title. See "Transl. in:" and "Transl. of" above.
