FINDING JOURNAL ARTICLES: INDEXES TO THE PHYSICS LITERATURE

APS PROLA search   http://prola.aps.org/
The PROLA search engine (which indexes all APS journal material published from 1893 to present) is now freely available to all users. Access to the full text of articles and other online journal features still requires a paid subscription.

The American Physical Society is one of nine publishers participating in a CrossRef pilot project that uses Google to provide full-text searching of scholarly research. The full text of all APS journal articles (all the way back to 1893) has been indexed by Google. Try the CrossRef Search at http://prola.aps.org/xrs.html

SPIN Web (APS membership required)
  • the Advance Abstracts Database (containing early abstracts from AIP journals and links to Physical Review journal articles prior to publication).
  • DPAGS and AIP Member Society Directories (regularly updated searchable directories, containing contact information for over 150,000 scientists)
  • Links to the latest news and information from leading physical science organizations.
IEEE Member Library   http://www.ieee.org/products/ieeemdl/htmlpages/whatisit.html
Access the information you need from the full range of IEEE publications
  • Topics from Applied Physics to VLSI Design
  • More than 120 IEEE journals, magazines, transactions and letters
  • More than 600 IEEE conference proceeding titles
  • All IEEE articles back to 1988, select titles to 1950.
  • Individual access at $35 a month for 25 articles with six month minimum commitment.
IOP journals   http://journals.iop.org/
IOP Select: A FREE service from IOP Journals; articles free within first month.

Science Direct (Search abstracts only)
Searching abstracts and title of existing abstracts. May not search deep abstracts for volumes prior to 1970.

Scitation (AIP)   http://scitation.aip.org/
Scitation is the online home of more than 100 journals from AIP, APS, ASCE, ASME, SPIE, and a host of other prestigious science and engineering societies.
Any visitor to Scitation can freely browse the table of contents and abstracts (without reference links) of all journals (to view abstracts in SPIN Web, you must be either a SPIN Web subscriber or be a subscriber to a journal featuring companion access to SPIN Web). Some journals also offer free searching of their content (check each journal for details about the level of access granted to non-subscribers).
  • Personalisation -- Even if you view Scitation journals through your library, you can register for access to these useful personalization features:
  • MyArticles - Collect favorite groups of articles, share them with colleagues - even manage multiple collections.
  • MyPublications - Maintain your own list of frequently-accessed journals.
  • MySubscriptions - View a list of all Scitation journals to which you have full-text access via either institutional or personal subscriptions.

SEARCH ENGINES/PORTALS
CiteSeerer/Research Index   http://citeseer.nj.nec.com/cs
Free database of computer science articles posted on the Web. Also compiles and analyzes citation information.

Google Scholar   http://scholar.google.com/
Google Scholar searches scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research, from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the web.
s
Google and Yahoo Physics Directories
http://google.com     http://yahoo.com
Organizes collections of links to websites. Editors select and sort websites into selected categories. Yahoo and Google Have different subject choices and search algorithms. Both search engines list the physic sites that show the heaviest use.
ALERT SERVICES
Many publishers and article databases allow you to register for their email "alerting services". Some of these will send you the table of contents (TOC) for each new journal issue as soon as it is available. Others maintain a search profile that you have defined, and run it at regular intervals, emailing "hits" found in new publications. The links below go directly to registration pages for these services.
