Introduction to U.S. Copyright (Title 17 U.S.C.)
What Is Not Protected By Copyright
Ideas, Methods, or Systems are not subject to copyright
protection. Copyright protection, therefore, is not available for: ideas or procedures for doing, making, or building things; scientific or technical methods or discoveries; business operations or procedures; mathematical principles; formulas, algorithms; or any other concept, process, or method of operation.
Section 102 of the copyright law, Title 17, United States Code, clearly expresses this principle: "In no case does copyright protection for an original work of authorship extend to any idea, procedure, process, system, method of operation, concept, principle, or discovery, regardless of the form in which it is described, explained, illustrated, or embodied in such work."

Although this website was put together by a law school, it is useful for
anyone needing copyright permission information in all subjects.
This website was designed by the staff of the Professional Center Library
for Law and Management at Wake Forest University. The goal of our website
is to make it easier for a teacher and/or scholar to obtain permission to
use a copyrighted work for teaching or scholarly activities. It
accomplishes this objective by bringing together in one place links to the
copyright permission webpages of publishers and journals.
"Our website is a web of links. There are four types of links available --
Publishers, an alphabetically-arranged list of links to publishers'
websites; Journals, an alphabetically-arranged list of journals linked to
their websites; Forms, Letters and Other Resources, a collection of links
to various websites that have standard forms, sample letters or policies;
and Other Copyright Websites, a collection of links to other copyright
webpages containing more substantive information on copyright issues."
